Tonight's homework is to complete Assignment 35.

Assignment 35 - Analyzing Our Consumption of Livestock

1a. Examine the data table above and make inferences about the global per capita meat consumption trends depicted. As always, support conclusions by referring to data and also try to connect the data to content from class.

1b. Calculate the percentage change in each from 1970 to 1990.

Below are useful measures for questions 2 – 7.

1 hectare produces 370 bushels of corn 1 hamburger patty stores 259 calories
1 bushel of corn contains 1,250 ears 1 chicken breast stores 231 calories
1 ear of corn stores 80 calories

2. Assuming the average person consumes about 2,000 calories/day; calculate how many calories a person must consume per year.

3. How many calories does a hectare of corn produce?

4. How many hectares of land are needed to sufficiently feed one person per day?

5. How much land would it take to produce 2,000 calories if you only ate beef? Since cows (especially in this example) require energy in order to produce muscle mass for consumption it actually takes 20 times as much land to produce food from beef than corn.

6. The earth has around 1.5 billion hectares of land suitable for agriculture. How many hectares would be needed if all 7 billion people ate beef—for 2,000 cal/day.

7. Refer to the total daily calories that you previously determined. Try to approximately research how many of your calories came from meat (ex. beef, chicken, etc.) and how many came from plant resources. Once completed, calculate how many hectares of land will be needed for your meat calories and your plant calories. How many total hectares will you need? How many hectares would be needed if all 7 billion people on earth had an identical diet?

Reflection

8. How does the data presented connect to our previous discussions and investigation of agriculture and its consequences?

9. How does the data presented connect to our previous discussions and investigation of sustainability?
